Nakatsukuni: Middle Lands

The two-person exhibition Nakatsukuni: Middle Lands presents the works of Kyoto-based artist Takuya Kumagai (b. 1987) and Chinese artist Liu Bin (b. 1979), exploring the liminal human realm as defined in Japanese mythology—a space poised between the divine heavens and the underworld. Set within the sacred ambiance of Komyo-ji Temple, a site revered in Jodo Buddhism as a threshold to the Pure Land, the exhibition resonates with themes of transition and existence. Kumagami’s evocative pieces, inspired by Greek mythology, capture the visceral emotions and physicality of humanity, while Liu Bin’s mushroom imagery, symbolizing the delicate boundary between life and death, complements this exploration of the in-between.
Together, their works weave a profound narrative of human experience, inviting contemplation within a spiritually charged setting.
